Jesus presents sayings that focus on the life of discipleship.  The essence of these sayings is that disciples must not make themselves the center of their lives. A disciple's life extends outward. Based on their faith in Jesus, they must be ready to give up their life as they know it in exchange for their life in Him.

For the Vigil Mass this year we hear the story of Jesus' Resurrection from the Gospel according to Matthew. The Gospel reminds us to have no fear, Jesus has risen from the dead.  We, too, are invited to open our eyes, in faith, and see the risen Christ in our midst.

Due to the length of the Vigil Mass with all of the beautiful services, songs, music, and readings, we have had to split it into 2 files. This file is Part 2.

In today's reading, John gives us a clear signal that we are to think of two levels of conversation going on in John's account, the one we read in the text between Jesus and his contemporaries, and the one going on between John and his end-of-the-century audience.  John is writing at the end of the century to people who are looking for the return of the risen Christ.

At the time Jesus was alive no one was being expelled from the synagogue for believing in Jesus. However, by the time John's Gospel was written, that is exactly what was happening.  John is telling this story to teach his contemporaries how to see Jesus in their midst.

In today's First Reading which is from Exodus, the people are thirsty.  In the Gospel, Jesus is thirsty.  The woman whom Jesus meets at the well is also thirsty, but in a completely different meaning of the word. The woman is spiritually thirsty. To quote a well known song, she was looking for love in all the wrong places.

Our Gospel reading is Matthew's story of Jesus' Transfiguration.  Jesus takes Peter, James, and John to a high mountain -- the traditional place for an encounter with God. While on the mountain Jesus' appearance changes: his face shines "like the sun" and his garments become "white as light."  Matthew is telling us that the disciples witnessed Jesus' glory, Jesus' divinity.

Jeremiah reminds us that God will never forget us.  When we truly believe this then we can trust Jesus to take care of us and our needs.  The Gospel asks for this kind of trust and for us to serve only God.  In serving a loving God we find life.

We are called to be holy.  To be holy means to be whole.  To have all the aspects of our life - spirituality, sexuality, physical, emotional, work, parenting, student - balanced.  Balanced doesn't mean equal.  The only way this can be done is by having Christ as the center of our life.  Then we see everything through His eyes, and have His Strength and wisdom to guide us.

It is amazing what you see when you look at the Gospels as a whole, instead of individual passages.  Jesus respected every one.  It didn't matter if they were rich or poor, educated or uneducated, if they believed Jesus or didn't believe Jesus.  We are called to respect others and the choices they make wether we like them or not.  And like Jesus we are to do our best to show people the right way to live.
