For the Vigil Mass this year we hear the story of Jesus' Resurrection from the Gospel according to Matthew. The Gospel reminds us to have no fear, Jesus has risen from the dead. We, too, are invited to open our eyes, in faith, and see the risen Christ in our midst. Due to the length of the Vigil Mass with all of the beautiful services, songs, music, and readings, we have had to split it into 2 files. This file is Part 2. In today's reading, John gives us a clear signal that we are to think of two levels of conversation going on in John's account, the one we read in the text between Jesus and his contemporaries, and the one going on between John and his end-of-the-century audience. John is writing at the end of the century to people who are looking for the return of the risen Christ. At the time Jesus was alive no one was being expelled from the synagogue for believing in Jesus. However, by the time John's Gospel was written, that is exactly what was happening. John is telling this story to teach his contemporaries how to see Jesus in their midst. Recording is of the 4:30 pm Mass at 14 Holy Helpers Church in West Seneca, NY on April 2, 2011. |

In today's First Reading which is from Exodus, the people are thirsty. In the Gospel, Jesus is thirsty. The woman whom Jesus meets at the well is also thirsty, but in a completely different meaning of the word. The woman is spiritually thirsty. To quote a well known song, she was looking for love in all the wrong places. Recording is of the 9:00 am Mass at 14 Holy Helpers Church in West Seneca, NY on March 27, 2011. |

Our Gospel reading is Matthew's story of Jesus' Transfiguration. Jesus takes Peter, James, and John to a high mountain -- the traditional place for an encounter with God. While on the mountain Jesus' appearance changes: his face shines "like the sun" and his garments become "white as light." Matthew is telling us that the disciples witnessed Jesus' glory, Jesus' divinity. Recording is of the 9:00 am Mass at 14 Holy Helpers Church in West Seneca, NY on March 20, 2011. |
