Fourteen Holy Helpers Catholic Church

Our Gospel reading is Matthew's story of Jesus' Transfiguration.  Jesus takes Peter, James, and John to a high mountain -- the traditional place for an encounter with God. While on the mountain Jesus' appearance changes: his face shines "like the sun" and his garments become "white as light."  Matthew is telling us that the disciples witnessed Jesus' glory, Jesus' divinity.

Today's Gospel is from the conclusion to the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 7:13 - 27). Having instructed his disciples and the crowds who gathered around to hear him, Jesus now draws his teaching to an end.

Jeremiah reminds us that God will never forget us.  When we truly believe this then we can trust Jesus to take care of us and our needs.  The Gospel asks for this kind of trust and for us to serve only God.  In serving a loving God we find life.

We are called to be holy.  To be holy means to be whole.  To have all the aspects of our life - spirituality, sexuality, physical, emotional, work, parenting, student - balanced.  Balanced doesn't mean equal.  The only way this can be done is by having Christ as the center of our life.  Then we see everything through His eyes, and have His Strength and wisdom to guide us.

The Scripture call us to give flavor to the life of others.  We do that by our works of kindness and generosity.  The second reading calls us not be fooled by appearances, but to see the Divine mystery often hidden in the ordinary.

It is amazing what you see when you look at the Gospels as a whole, instead of individual passages.  Jesus respected every one.  It didn't matter if they were rich or poor, educated or uneducated, if they believed Jesus or didn't believe Jesus.  We are called to respect others and the choices they make wether we like them or not.  And like Jesus we are to do our best to show people the right way to live.

The Beatitudes are a gift from God.  They show us God's wisdom and to look beyond the present moment.  We are called to keep our eyes fixed on heaven.
