In today's reading, John gives us a clear signal that we are to think of two levels of conversation going on in John's account, the one we read in the text between Jesus and his contemporaries, and the one going on between John and his end-of-the-century audience. John is writing at the end of the century to people who are looking for the return of the risen Christ. At the time Jesus was alive no one was being expelled from the synagogue for believing in Jesus. However, by the time John's Gospel was written, that is exactly what was happening.
