Disciples of Jesus are to imitate the frequency and depth of divine mercy. The failure to do so has consequences at the final judgement.  If a brother sins against you forgive him not seven times, but seventy-seven times.

In talking about binding and loosing on earth and heaven, Jesus grants his disciples the same power originally given solely to Peter. This ministry is performed within the context of prayer including the prayer of the entire community as signified by two or three who gather in Jesus' name.

Jesus presents sayings that focus on the life of discipleship.  The essence of these sayings is that disciples must not make themselves the center of their lives. A disciple's life extends outward. Based on their faith in Jesus, they must be ready to give up their life as they know it in exchange for their life in Him.

The passage reminds us that Peter is the foundation of the Church.  His authority and that of the disciples will be succeeded in the Pope and Bishops.

While his disciples were out in a boat at night during a strong wind and rough waves, they see Jesus walking on the waters towards them. Peter attempts the same but his fears in strong wind cause him to start sinking ... but Jesus reaches out his hand to save Peter.
