Joseph and Mary traveled to Bethlehem. There she gave birth to a son whom they named Jesus. Angels appeared to nearby shepherds and proclaimed to them of the birth of our Lord and Savior.

Jesus talks longest about the servant with the fewest talents because most Christians are like him. He wants to jar these believers out of their complacency before it's too late, to persuade them to do the work for the kingdom that he assigns them.

Disciples must be about the work that Jesus wants them to be doing before it is "too late". Otherwise they might find themselves standing for all eternity  like the foolish virgins watching the light from their lamps -- lamps lit too late -- bounce off that door that will never open again.

Jesus' simple supper that nourishes roughly ten thousand people presents Him as the Lord who in earlier times provided food for those in need through Moses, Elijah, and Elisha.  In other words, in this Gospel, the evangelist shows that Jesus is divine.

Jesus sets out three parables. At the end he asks his disciples if they understand the messages from each. He is trying to reinforce that they need to ponder and study his teachings in order to see how they can put them into practice.

Jesus is missing after a feast in Jerusalem. Found several days later by Joseph and Mary, they ask why he left without telling them. While they where worried about his safety he explained that he needed to be in the temple.

He is not only asking the the Father be with him as he completes his mission but that his divine status, his preexistence with God, and the intimate nature of his relationship with the Father become visible on earth.

When the disciples finally recognized Jesus and remembered that their hearts were burning within them as he explained the Scriptures, they returned to the community in Jerusalem.  Like these two disciples who told how Jesus was made know to them, now all who participate in the liturgy also go forth to bring the good news to others.
